Wood dust is considered carcinogenic—Technical Rule 553 for Hazardous Substances sets the occupational exposure limit at two milligrams per cubic meter of air. In practice, this means that Class M dust collectors with 99.9 percent separation efficiency are the standard for every handheld power tool. The automatic on/off function of the S-series vacuum cleaners starts when the tool is turned on and continues running afterward.

Let’s be honest: The RUWI router table with a 120-mm dual extraction system is not designed for use with a handheld vacuum cleaner—it requires a chip extraction system. Whether your workers’ compensation association subsidizes extraction equipment depends on your membership: Carpentry shops are usually members of the BGHM, which does not offer product subsidies; businesses in the ancillary construction sector are members of the BG BAU, which has a subsidy program for dust collectors. We’ll clarify which applies to you over the phone.

Mafell designs its cordless tools based on the Cordless Alliance System: 18-volt LiHD batteries manufactured by Metabo, which are mechanically and electrically identical across more than fifty brands. If you’re already using Metabo batteries, they’ll work on any Mafell cordless tool without an adapter—and vice versa.

When making the switch, it’s not so much the individual machine that matters as the platform: chargers, batteries, and backup devices pay for themselves over the years. We’ll go over the numbers with you to determine which model—with or without a battery pack—makes the most sense for you.

Mafell has been manufacturing in Oberndorf am Neckar since 1899—from our workshop in Fluorn-Winzeln, that’s just one village over, a good four kilometers as the crow flies from factory gate to factory gate. According to the company, its vertical integration rate is 85 percent: engines, transmissions, and precision parts are manufactured at the Lindenhof plant on Beffendorfer Straße.

Two Mafell product groups are intentionally omitted from the configurator because they have their own section separate from our tables. The BST drilling stations feature a drill press with a 43-mm Euro-neck that is guided along the workpiece—ideal for serial drilling during assembly; the RUWI drilling table remains the stationary workstation in the workshop. The FM 800 and FM 1000 milling motors are built-in motors with a 43-mm Euro collar for CNC and fixtures—they do not fit into the RUWI router table , which operates with its own motor unit.

We’ll determine the right fit during our discussion: For end mills with an 8-mmshank in Mafell routers, we’ll check the shank tolerance, length, and maximum speed for each tool.

The tooth shape also plays a key role in determining the result: Alternating-tooth (WZ) blades are the all-around choice for solid wood and plywood, both lengthwise and crosswise. Flat-tooth and trapezoidal-tooth (FZ/TZ) blades make clean cuts in plastics and aluminum profiles; the TR variants are designed for laminates and Trespa; and for fiber cement, a diamond blade should be used on the saw.

Rule of thumb for the number of teeth: Fewer teeth remove material quickly in the longitudinal direction; more teeth provide a fine cut with minimal tear-out.
