Anchoring stair stringers and steps, assembling bed and table frames, heavy-duty solid wood construction: Where 12-mm dowels are too thin, the DD40 P comes into its own—it drills dowel joints up to Ø 16 mm. This machine design has been in use since 2001; the newer DDF 40 has replaced its little brother, but the P remains in the product line because no one else serves this specific market segment.

The principle is the same as with the DDF 40: two holes in a single stroke, 32 mm apart—the second dowel secures the joint against twisting. Here, it operates at 1,000 W with a drilling depth of 40 mm, guided by the flip-up swivel stop with locking positions from 0 to 90°. To be honest: The precision is uncompromising in both directions—the dowels need to be threaded in without any play; drilling into end grain requires noticeable force; and changing the drill bits in pairs is a recurring task you’ll need to factor into your schedule.

The fact that you’re buying the Mafell machine at RUWI isn’t a given: We’re manufacturers ourselves—tools for woodworking professionals from Fluorn-Winzeln, 4 kilometers from the Mafell factory in Oberndorf am Neckar. We carry only what we can recommend from our own experience—and, for your day-to-day cabinetmaking needs, we’ll honestly refer you to our sister company.

Here's how to use it

  • Anchoring stairs: Stringer and treads with anchors up to Ø 16 mm—that's what this machine is designed for.
  • Assembling frames so they won't twist: Beds, tables, heavy frames—two holes per stroke.
  • Joining miter cuts: Swivel stop, 0 to 90°, with detents.
  • Repeat Edge Spacing: Use stops instead of scoring—even for small production runs.

Does this fit in your workshop?

For cabinet bodies, rows of holes, and everyday furniture work up to 12 mm, the DDF 40 is the more modern choice—with a flat base plate and handling similar to a flat dowel router. When long, loose tenons and assembly clearance are required in large assemblies, the Festool Domino XL is the gold standard—we’ll tell you that straight up. There is no cordless version. The DD40 P is the machine for shops that regularly make heavy-duty joints in solid wood—it’s been the go-to solution there for over twenty years.

You can read about why your vacuum cleaner should be rated M in the knowledge article on wood dust extraction —and the machine advisor will guide you to the right machine in just two or three questions.
