The baseboard goes on the brick wall, the frame anchor into the concrete, the substructure on the screed: As soon as masonry comes into play, the standard drill/driver stops—and the ASB 18 takes over. It’s the A 18 with a switchable hammer mechanism: brushless, pressure-sensitive switch, pulse function for starting the drill, Ergo-Balance center of gravity in the middle of the handle—and when it hits stone, it strikes.

The distinction in the names is important: “hammer drilling” refers to drilling with axial hammer action for anchor holes in brick and concrete—“impact driving” refers to torque in newton-meters for heavy-duty fastening; the ASB can handle the former, while the SR 800-18 handles the latter. And, as is true for the entire trio, let’s be honest: others win the price comparison—the ASB operates on the CAS system, a battery ecosystem for Mafell, Metabo, Lamello, and Prebena, and is not compatible with Festool or Bosch. Its 43-mm collet fits into the Mafell drilling station: when clamped in, it drills with guidance.

The fact that you’re buying the Mafell machine at RUWI isn’t a given: We’re manufacturers ourselves—tools for woodworking professionals from Fluorn-Winzeln, 4 kilometers from the Mafell factory in Oberndorf am Neckar. We carry what’s part of the system—and we’ll tell you honestly when the mass market does too.

Here's how to use it

  • Anchoring in stone: Hammer in, drill into brick and concrete—base, frame, substructure.
  • Turn off the hammer function; the wood-drilling mode works as usual: without the hammer function, it operates as a full-featured 18-V drill/driver.
  • Guided drilling: Insert the 43-mm collet into the drilling station —vertically instead of freehand.
  • A battery pool: CAS batteries are swapped between the saw, screwdriver, and impact wrench.

Does this fit in your workshop?

The ASB 18 is the all-in-one solution for businesses whose daily work alternates between wood and masonry—interior finishing, assembly, and renovation. If you never drill into stone, the A 18 will save you money; for light-duty and tight-space jobs, the A 12 is the right choice. And when it comes to hammer drilling in reinforced concrete, even an impact drill isn’t the right tool—that’s just the truth.

The equipment consultant can determine which machine is right for which job by asking just two or three questions.
