The 24-drill-bit hole for the round dowel must be perfectly vertical—not just roughly so, but precisely so that the dowel fits without any resistance later on. When used freehand, the auger drill tends to veer off course, while a traditional drill stand gets stuck. The Mafell drilling station takes a different approach: a single-column aluminum profile that guides your hand drill—providing a clear view of the marking line and the drill bit tip, as well as space to change drill bits.

At the heart of the system is the 80-mm-high drill guide: Six vertically mounted rollers grip the drill bit via an iris mechanism continuously with a range of 8 to 30 mm—the tool itself is guided, not just the machine, and that’s exactly what keeps the drill bit on track instead of letting it veer off course. You adjust the tension of the return cable—for example, for horizontal drilling—and after the stroke, the machine retracts on its own. The drilling depth is set using the scale; for production runs, swap out the insert plate for the tracing insert and work with a drilling template. Any drill with a 43-mm collet can be mounted—the station comes without a drill or drill bit.

The fact that you’re buying the Mafell drilling station at RUWI isn’t a given: We’re manufacturers ourselves—tools for woodworking professionals from Fluorn-Winzeln, 4 kilometers from the Mafell factory in Oberndorf am Neckar. We build drilling tables ourselves for permanent workstations—and offer the drilling station for what it is: a portable guided drilling system.

Here's how to use it

  • Drill vertically wherever the workpiece is located: at the joinery shop, on the construction site, or on the beam.
  • Deep drilling without veering off course: the BST 460 guides drill bits up to 460 mm in length to a depth of 300 mm—the BST 320 guides drill bits up to 320 mm in length.
  • Batch production using a stencil: Insert the copy insert, trace the hole pattern—parallel and side stops complement the batch production process.
  • Clamping Your Tool: A 43-mm collet is all you need—from corded to cordless drill/drivers.

Does this fit in your workshop?

The drilling station is an attachment for a hand-held drill—it’s designed for guided drilling on workpieces that can’t be brought to the machine: carpentry, assembly, and large parts. If you’re in the opposite situation and are setting up a permanent drilling station in your workshop, check out our own RUWI anddrilling tables —together, they cover everything from beams on the construction site to repetitive drilling at the workstation. The Basic Station cannot drill at angles; for that, there’s the swiveling Drilling Station S.

The equipment consultant can determine which machine is right for which job by asking just two or three questions.
