Mafell MS 55 Hand-Held Circular Saw

Cutting lumber to length on scaffolding, splitting planks at the joinery shop, trimming formwork during rough-in: The MS 55 is the Mafell saw built for tough, everyday use—with a die-cast magnesium base plate, weighing 3.3 kg, and built for the construction site rather than the showroom. It’s also the most affordable entry-level model in the Mafell line of handheld circular saws and features the F guide rail system.

Its safety principle is based on the classic riving knife: It keeps the cut open behind the blade so that the solid wood does not contract against the blade during a rip cut, causing the saw to kickback—which is why the operator’s manual specifies blades whose base is thinner and whose tooth width is greater than the thickness of the riving knife. It features a cutting depth of 10 to 55 mm, bevel cuts up to 45° according to the scale, 1,100 watts at 4,400 rpm, and the solid-material stop bar serves as a second support and protects both the blade and the user when the saw is set down. Dust extraction is via the 35-mm connector. And to be honest: According to the operator’s manual, it is not approved for continuous industrial use.

Here's how to use it

• Cutting lumber: Solid wood, planks, and boards—cut lengthwise and crosswise—under conditions that cause machinery to age.
• Angle up to 45°: Set the angle using the scale, lock it in place, and cut.
• Guiding on rails: The F-rail system used on Mafell's large saws works here as well.
• The blade for the material: from the Z-16 longitudinal-cut blade in the standard series to the 160 series for laminate, aluminum, and abrasive materials.
