100 Years of OPO Oeschger – From Name to Mission
The story begins in 1926, when Paul Oeschger founded his trading company in Zurich-Oerlikon and named it OPO—short for “Oeschger Paul in Oerlikon.” In 2026, the company will celebrate its 100th anniversary. In 1934, his brother Max joined the business and took charge of catalogs and advertising; starting in 1948, Paul Oeschger Jr. expanded sales throughout Switzerland. In 1968, Peter Oeschger, Max’s son, became the next key figure of the second generation: He oversaw the construction of the new logistics center in Kloten, which began operations in 1972, and introduced information technology that same year with the company’s first computer. In 1989, he launched “OPO-Direct,” an electronic ordering system—the precursor to today’s online store.
Since 1998, Patrick Oeschger has represented the third generation at the helm: serving as CEO starting in 2006, as owner since 2016, and today as Chairman of the Board of Directors. OPO sums up its philosophy in a single sentence—“progressive by tradition”: looking ahead and asking what customers will need next. Around 280 employees are working toward this goal, and the company trains its own apprentices. And to mark the anniversary, OPO shares a thought that resonates well with us: A 100-year history isn’t written alone, but together—with employees, customers, and partners.
Part of the industry, not just a supplier
As the main sponsor of the Association of Swiss Master Carpenters and Furniture Manufacturers, OPO Oeschger supports training and continuing education in the carpentry trade; the company helps schools plan and equip their workshops, and in its own customer profiles, it showcases real businesses and their work—such as a training workshop in the Engadin that trains young skilled workers. Added to this is a commitment to social and environmental causes: The headquarters in Kloten is Minergie-certified, and OPO supports social foundations in the region. For a woodworking business, this means in everyday life: a supplier that knows the industry from the inside and never stands still.
The Product Range: 70,000 items for fittings, tools, and timber construction
The product range is both broad and deep: hardware for doors, construction, furniture, and sliding doors; glass and metal building hardware; lighting for furniture construction—as well as tools and fastening technology, including machinery, hand tools, consumables, and workwear, and wood construction technology for carpenters. The brand lineup includes Bosch, Festool, Mafell, Fein, DeWalt, Lamello, Blum, Hettich, Hawa—and RUWI. The product range is aimed at cabinetmakers and interior designers, carpenters, glass and metal fabricators, architects, resellers, and schools.
A Look Inside the Logistics Center: Why Your Goods Arrive So Fast
OPO Oeschger’s greatest strength can be summed up in numbers. Kloten is home to one of the industry’s most modern, fully automated logistics centers: an automated small-parts warehouse with 90,000 bins, a high-bay warehouse with 8,000 pallet spaces, and ten automated multitowers for long goods. Every day, approximately 1,800 packages and 230 general cargo shipments leave the facility, and 440,000 customer orders are processed annually—with a delivery readiness rate of 98 percent.
Orders placed by 5:00 p.m. will ship from the warehouse the same day. For urgent orders, there’s Post Express—order by 10:15 a.m. for same-day delivery—the Swiss-Express Innight overnight courier, which delivers before the workday begins, and, upon request, an order option available until 6:00 p.m. As a logistics partner of Swiss Post, all shipments are fully CO₂-offset under the “pro clima” label. This turns “fast delivery” into a reliable commitment—a missing wear part won’t cost you a day of production.
Digital Tools for Everyday Workshop Life
The trajectory of “OPO-Direct” from 1989 to the present is clearly evident: OPO has been driving digitalization in the skilled trades for decades. A good example is the SmartLabel labels—they’re affixed to an item’s storage location, and a single click is all it takes to reorder directly. In addition, there are online configurators—for example, for pivot door systems and self-locking locks—as well as interfaces to industry software, flip-through catalogs, and a barcode scanner in the store. OPO shares its expertise through an expert and product blog, as well as through seminars and webinars.
OPO World: The Industry Under One Roof
A highlight on the calendar is OPO World, the company’s in-house trade show in Kloten. It evolved from the long-standing “Schreiner” trade show and is considered the second-largest industry event in Switzerland: In 2024, over the course of four days, approximately 5,000 visitors came to discover the latest innovations in hardware, machinery, tools, and software from 160 exhibitors across 4,800 m²—along with expert presentations, live demonstrations, and a behind-the-scenes look at the logistics center. We were also there as exhibitors and demonstrated router table lifting table action.
